The Bayat Foundation and Starkey Hearing Foundation Mission to the Dominican Republic

Bringing Health, Healing and Hope to the neediest of our fellow Afghans, were the three powerful and heartfelt reasons which inspired my family and I to establish The Bayat Foundation in 2006. Last month, from April 18th to April 20th, The Bayat Foundation, in partnership with with our friends at The Starkey Hearing Foundation (www.starkeyhearingfoundation.org), was privileged to join a three day medical mission which brought Hope, Healing—and the gift of Hearing—to the people of the Dominican Republic.

In Afghanistan, both of our organizations have worked together, side by side, on two hearing care missions which have restored the hearing of 2,479 Afghans. I was determined that our contribution to this newest hearing care mission would demonstrate just how much we appreciated their work in Afghanistan—and our support of Starkey’s commitment to help people in need everywhere. So, my daughter Leah and I joined the group of Bayat Foundation volunteers who assisted the Starkey Hearing Foundation’s team of seasoned, strong and exceptional hearing health specialists.

Our hearing care mission took place in Santo Domingo and Santiago de los Caballeros, the two largest cities in the Dominican Republic. Our combined Bayat-Starkey hearing care team worked with unyielding determination to help every person who came to the mobile hearing care stations, seeking a cure for their deafness or hearing loss.

Every patient we worked with represented the beautiful and diverse history of the Dominican Republic, and embodied a range of ages—from one year to 115 (!) years old. Approximately 29% of the people we assisted had suffered hearing loss at birth, while over one-third of our patients didn’t know the reasons for their hearing loss.

Our combined Bayat-Starkey hearing care team was able to provide the gift of hearing to 1,200 people living in Santo Domingo and Santiago de los Caballeros. Leah and I felt happy—and humbled—that our efforts had helped so many people hear—many, for the first time in their lives.

Yet, despite the progress we were able to make, everyone involved with the hearing care mission realized that there are millions of people around the world who need the kind of exceptional hearing medical care that the Starkey Hearing Foundation provides—and the Bayat Foundation is honored to support. More than 360 million people throughout the world are affected by deafness or hearing loss. And this sad, staggering and sobering statistic includes thousands of our fellow Afghans.

In late 2016, The Bayat Foundation and the Starkey Hearing Foundation will join together and launch our third annual Afghanistan Hearing Care Mission. Last year, our Afghanistan Hearing Care Mission restored the hearing of 1,544 children and adults living in Kabul, Herat and Balkh Provinces. This year, The Bayat Foundation and the Starkey Hearing Foundation, working together, are focused on one goal: we are determined to provide Hearing—and Hope for a better life—to every person who seeks our assistance, here in Afghanistan, and around the world.

Afghan Wireless 14th Anniversary

Fourteen years ago, in 2002, with much joy, anticipation and hope, President Karzai made the very first call using the Afghan Wireless Communications Network. On that day in 2002, fewer than 40,000 Afghans had cell phones—in fact, we launched Afghan Wireless with just 22,000 subscribers living in three provinces. We founded Afghan Wireless, because we were determined to help rebuild our country, by developing a wireless communications network that by connecting Afghans with each other, and the wider world, could lift Afghanistan’s isolation and drive our country’s economic resurgence.

Your support and partnership has helped Afghan Wireless enjoy fourteen years of breathtaking progress. Today, AWCC provides global-class 3G and 3.75G+ Voice, Data, Internet and My Money Mobile Payment Services to 4.2 million subscribers who live in all 34 provinces of Afghanistan. AWCC’s 3.75G+ high speed network service is available in thirteen provinces.  Since 2002, we’ve invested over $400,000,000 to develop Afghanistan’s largest and strongest communications network. And our partnerships with 425 carrier networks in 125 countries means that you can use your Afghan Wireless phone almost anywhere in the world.

On May 15, 2016, Afghan Wireless proudly hosted an Anniversary Ceremony to celebrate the fourteen years we’ve been honored to provide you, our fellow Afghans, with rapid, reliable and affordable communications services. Our Anniversary Celebration was attended by 1500 of my AWCC and Bayat Group colleagues—the people, whose hard work, creativity and dedication are the reasons that Afghan Wireless was able to pioneer our nation’s wireless communications industry—and why our Company continues to lead the industry today.

For everyone at AWCC, sharing our great time of celebration with so many friends, colleagues and guests—while enjoying amazing performances from Amir Jan Saboori and Shahzad Adeel–it was also the perfect moment to think about just how much AWCC’s Anniversary Theme, “Fourteen Years of Spreading Smiles Across Afghanistan,” represents our Company’s best intentions, our achievements and our continuing belief in a productive and prosperous future for Afghanistan.

We’ve always been committed to providing you with the most innovative communications technology available. But I’m proudest of these two additional achievements, which, together with our efforts to build and lead Afghanistan’s telecommunications sector, have helped improve the lives of thousands of Afghans:

  1. We’re the only wireless company in Afghanistan that was founded by Afghans—and our company continues to be led by Afghans. 99% of our workforce is Afghan, and Afghan Wireless, together with our parent company, The Bayat Group (bayat-group.com), are Afghanistan’s biggest providers of jobs.
  1. We champion the effort of every employee at Afghan Wireless who wants to build up their educational and professional credentials. Today, Afghan Wireless provides scholarships to every one of our employees who is attending a University. And our internal professional development program offers over fifty-two professional development courses on a broad range of subjects including, Competition Strategy, Effective Management, English, IT and Accountancy.

But our support of education doesn’t stop at AWCC’s doorstep. Our partners at The Bayat Foundation (www.bayatfoundation.org), are building schools throughout Afghanistan and funding the expansion of existing educational institutions. AWCC will always be committed to helping our colleagues achieve their highest educational aspirations—and to helping build an Afghanistan where providing every citizen with the best education possible is viewed as the most important sign of our collective progress.

C.S. Lewis, the author and philosopher, said that progress “…means getting nearer to the place you want to be.”  For Afghan Wireless, and Afghanistan, these last fourteen years, from 2002 until today, have been filled with great perils, but most importantly, together we have built and experienced a time of tremendous progress.

In 2002, Afghanistan’s GDP stood at about 4.1 billion dollars, fewer than 800,000 children were enrolled in school and life expectancy for most of us was about 41 years. Today, our country’s GDP is more than 20 billion dollars, our life expectancy is about 60 years and 10.5 million students—almost half are women—attend 16,000 schools throughout Afghanistan.

Despite the many challenges these fourteen years have presented to us, we Afghans continue to make progress, and we continue to move towards creating the nation we want to be: A country where every Afghan is respected, where every Afghan is educated and where every Afghan has the opportunity to build the best life possible for their families.

Happy Anniversary from Afghan Wireless. We’re grateful to celebrate fourteen years of connecting you to the most important people and places in your life. And I hope that we will always be your partner in progress.

Until next time,

Education and Developing Your Professional Skills: Important For You and Important For Afghanistan’s Future

$

During the last week of May, a group of my AWCC colleagues participated in a seminar course which helped them understand the types of situations which can cause people to experience fear and/or anger. Most importantly, the seminar taught each participant how to develop skills and strategies which will help them address and resolve the types of fears and anxieties that we all experience in our lives, from time to time.

At first glance, it might seem unusual that a wireless communications company is sponsoring a seminar course that helps our colleagues learn more about themselves, instead of learning more about smartphones and high speed Internet. However, since our earliest days as a company, Afghan Wireless has believed that one of our most important duties is to help our staff develop their educational and professional capabilities to their highest and best level possible.

Since the beginning of 2016, Afghan Wireless has sponsored a broad range of employee education and professional development programs, that are providing our staff with the opportunity to learn new skills, and also, improve their current talents. The programs we’ve hosted in 2016 are in addition to the fifty-two professional development courses that AWCC has provide for our staff in recent years.

And, our commitment to helping everyone at Afghan Wireless become not just the best professionals, but the best people and citizens possible, doesn’t stop at AWCC’s doorstep. Last Fall, we increased the amount of scholarship assistance we provide to our Afghan Wireless staff who are attending a university. And right now, there are AWCC staff attending fourteen universities throughout Afghanistan.

So often on my Blog, I’ve discussed how getting the best education that you can, not only makes you a stronger person, it means that together, we can build a stronger Afghanistan. Since ancient times, Afghanistan has been a center of trade and our geographic position has helped us play a vital role in the economic development of our region. Education will help us acquire the skills we need to control and develop our country’s natural resources. New knowledge and new abilities will also help us harness our proud tradition of entrepreneurship, to build a modern private sector filled with successful Small and Medium Sized companies. And as we create the new markets, new jobs—and the new opportunities for people to use their skills—we, together, will help Afghanistan become a more economically self sufficient nation.

Today, 10.5 million young Afghans are attending 16,000 schools located in every part of our country. These young people, eager for knowledge and an opportunity to contribute their talents, are the foundation upon which an economically prosperous Afghanistan can be built.

The Bayat Foundation Builds Housing—And Brings Hope—To The Children of Tahia Maskan Orphanage

$

Kabul’s Tahia Maskan Orphanage provides shelter, safety, food, education—and a measure of hope for a better life—to 500 Afghan children, who are as young as four to as old as eighteen years of age. The living conditions at Tahia Maskan are down-to-earth and the children who live there represent a tiny fraction of the 2,000,000 orphans throughout Afghanistan who are the most vulnerable of our citizens—and desperately in need of all the help we can give to them.

Last week, The Bayat Foundation completed the renovation of a dormitory at the Tahia Maskan Orphanage—a project that will have a big and positive impact on the lives of the children living Tahia Maskan now, and in the days to come.

Our renovation project began with the strong partnership we established with the Executive Staff of Tahia Maskan, and also, with the leadership of the Enabled Children’s Initiative (ECI) (www.enabledchildren.org), an Afghan based organization serving special needs children. Several children with special needs live at Tahia Maskan, and the renovated dormitory will provide them with the housing and treatment they need not just to live, but also, to thrive.

The scope of repairs the dormitory needed was big, but I’m happy to say that our hearts and our determination to help the children in every way possible, was even bigger. Some of the renovations our Foundation provided to the dormitory included, the complete removal of the building’s interior structure and the installation of new flooring, interior walls, sleeping quarters, laundry and bathroom facilities, the provision of new furniture and air conditioning. Now that the renovations to the building are completed, the dormitory will welcome its first residents this summer.

The Bayat Foundation’s work to renovate Tahia Maskan’s dormitory is the latest example of our long-term commitment to help the children of Tahia Maskan. In 2013, The Bayat Foundation installed a computer lab at the orphanage and donated supplies of children’s winter clothing. And we’ll continue to provide assistance to the children of Tahia Maskan—and to children throughout Afghanistan—for the reasons stated so powerfully by my wife, Mrs. Fatema Bayat: “These orphans deserve hope, our help—and above all, they deserve our love.”

August 28th-August 29th Hearing Care Mission In Afghanistan Fulfills Objective of Providing Afghans From Kabul and Throughout The Country With Vital Hearing Restoration and Hearing Care Services

Kabul, Afghanistan—September 6, 2016—Fulfilling their pledge to enrich the lives of the Afghan people with the three precious gifts of Hearing, Healing and Hope, The Bayat Foundation (www.bayatfoundation.org), Afghanistan’s largest, private, non-profit Health, Education and Social Development Organization, and The Starkey Hearing Foundation (www.starkeyhearingfoundation.org), announced the successful conclusion of their third annual joint Bayat-Starkey Afghanistan Hearing Care Mission.

The Bayat-Starkey Hearing Care Mission, held in Kabul from August 28th and August 29th, provided free auditory and hearing restoration care to approximately 1,000 Afghan citizens, who hailed from every region of the country.

Each Bayat-Starkey Hearing Care Team was composed of an international assembly of professional Audiologists who donated their services, working with The Starkey Hearing Foundation’s renown team of hearing care specialists, as well as scores of highly trained and dedicated volunteers from The Bayat Foundation and all divisions of The Bayat Group of Companies, including Afghan Wireless and the Ariana Television Network.

Dr. Ehsanollah Bayat and Mrs. Fatema Bayat spearheaded The Bayat Group and The Bayat Foundation’s efforts for the Bayat-Starkey Hearing Care Mission, illustrating their profound and personal commitment to the success of the mission, and their determination to improve the lives of their fellow Afghans. During the mission’s two-day period, the Bayat-Starkey Hearing Care Teams worked intensively, from morning until dusk.

The Bayat-Starkey Hearing Care Teams utilized a meticulous intake process, which helped prepare each patient to receive the most appropriate and effective type of hearing care. The intake process included recording vital statistics of each patient, conducting a thorough examination of the ears and auditory system, and also, cleaning the ear and auditory system. After cleaning the ears and auditory system, each patient was fitted with a set of ear molds—clear, wear-resistant plastic discs used to house the hearing aids that were provided without cost to each patient.

After completing intake, volunteers escorted each patient into the treatment area, where the Bayat-Starkey hearing care team, together with specially trained volunteers, fit each patient with the hearing devices that empowered each patient—many for the first time in their lives—to use the precious, powerful gift of hearing, sound and their voices to connect with their families, their communities and the world.

“In two days, on August 28th, and August 29th, our Bayat-Starkey Teams helped restore the hearing of almost 1,000 Afghans—and since 2014, The Bayat Foundation, working together with our amazing partner, The Starkey Hearing Foundation, have provided the gift of hearing to more than 3,000 Afghans,” said Dr. Ehsanollah Bayat, the Co-Chair of The Bayat Foundation. “I know that The Bayat Foundation and The Starkey Hearing Foundation will continue to work together here in Afghanistan, striving to bring the gifts of healing, health and hope to our nation.”

“All of us at The Bayat Foundation and The Starkey Hearing Foundation, have been moved and inspired by this opportunity to help thousands of Afghans hear, many for the very first time in their lives,” said Mrs. Fatema Bayat, the Co-Chair of The Bayat Foundation. “In 2017, we hope to provide hearing care to even more Afghans, and I know that together, The Bayat Foundation and The Starkey Hearing Foundation will keep moving forward, until we reach that moment where every person in Afghanistan affected by hearing loss is healed from it, and every Afghan has an opportunity to live a long, prosperous and healthy life.”

About the Bayat Foundation:
